A communal cup with a brief but well-documented period of public ownership.[1]
Transfer of ownership
The cup begins in the center of the table. One person takes a sip and leaves it next to their phone. Under the customary law of adjacent objects, it is now their cup.
Restitution
When challenged, the new owner offers to put the cup back. The rest of the table declines on the grounds that it has been returned in a materially different condition.
Documentary record
All witnesses recall hearing “this is for everybody.” None recall being offered any.
