Missy Elliott is an American rapper, songwriter, and producer. In the 1997 video for “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly),” she wore an inflatable black jumpsuit, creating a silhouette that needed its own camera lens.[1]
The suit
Costume designer June Ambrose worked on the look for the Hype Williams video. The oversized suit and fisheye photography made the whole thing look as if the future had arrived early and taken up two seats.
Materials
Vinyl accounted for the exterior. Air accounted for most of the square footage.
Legacy
The suit remains a useful counterexample whenever somebody says an outfit is doing too much.
