Go-go is a style of funk that emerged in Washington, D.C., in the 1970s. Its live sound pairs sustained percussion and bass with exchanges between performers and the crowd.[1]
Chuck Brown
Guitarist and bandleader Chuck Brown helped develop the sound and became known as the Godfather of Go-Go. His band performed “Bustin’ Loose” on the Library of Congress plaza in 2002.
The pocket
The drum and percussion groove can keep going between songs. This creates a practical problem for anybody who was waiting for the song to end before going to get a drink.
Preservation
The D.C. Public Library’s Go-Go Archive collects recordings, photographs, flyers, and oral histories. A set list can tell you what was scheduled. A tape can tell you what happened when the crowd got involved.
